Still Life Painting, Léon Laurent Galand, Vase of Red Poppies, Flowers Painting, Oil On Canvas, Antique Painting, XX (QF785)
ANTIQUE PAINTING, VASE WITH RED POPPIES, FLORAL STILL LIFE, OIL ON CANVAS, EARLY 20TH CENTURY (QF785)
The antique floral still life painting presented here is a refined floral composition featuring a rich bouquet of red poppies with large, gently undulating petals,
arranged in an elegant white vase decorated with blue and pink floral motifs. The composition stands out for its striking colour contrast between the intense red
of the flowers and the delicate olive-green and ochre tones of the background.
A cut poppy resting on the dark surface beside the vase adds a natural touch to the scene, while the thick, expressive brushstrokes enhance the texture of the
petals and the vibrancy of the composition. The painting conveys an intimate and elegant atmosphere, characteristic of French floral still life paintings from
the early 20th century. The warm palette and free-flowing brushwork emphasise the beauty of the poppies, the undisputed focal point of the artwork.

The painting is signed and dated in the lower right-hand corner: Léon Galand, 1926, a French painter and illustrator known for his portraits, landscapes, nudes,
genre scenes and floral compositions.

in Paris, where he studied under Ernest Michel, Robert Delaunay, Gustave Moreau, Fernand Cormon and Joseph Blanc, artists associated with the French academic tradition.
An important milestone in his career came in 1896, when he was admitted to the Société Artistique de l’Hérault.
From 1904 onwards, he participated in the prestigious Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he continued to exhibit for several years.
He received an honourable mention, a third-class medal and subsequently a gold medal. He also obtained the second Grand Prix de Rome.
His artistic career developed during the early years of the 20th century, a period when genre painting and French floral painting enjoyed considerable popularity.
In 1924, Léon Laurent Galand was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur, an important recognition of his artistic achievements.
He also participated in exhibitions including the Salon d’Hiver.
Galand’s work is now represented in public and private collections, including the museum in Montpellier. The antique painting is presented in a gilded frame.
Both the antique frame and the oil painting have undergone careful, professional restoration.
