ANTIQUE PAINTINGS, LANDSCAPE WITH YOUNG SHEPHERDESS AND DOG, OIL ON CANVAS, EARLY 20TH CENTURY. (QP762)

The Antique Paintings category presents an oil on canvas painting, an antique artwork representing an authentic example of French landscape painting

between the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.

The painting fully expresses the artist's sensitivity in depicting the countryside with extraordinary attention to atmospheric effects, natural light, and rural life.

In the foreground, a young shepherdess rests while seated on a rock beside a black dog, while in the background several cows graze peacefully in a

timeless and serene landscape.

The antique painting is signed in the lower left C. Terraire, a French painter active during the nineteenth-century artistic period.

Clovis Frédérick Terraire (1858–1931) was a French painter belonging to the Lyon School landscape tradition, active between the late nineteenth

century and the first decades of the twentieth century. He is best known for his rural landscapes, pastoral scenes, and views of the French countryside.

He trained in the artistic environment of Lyon, which, during the second half of the nineteenth century, was one of the leading centres of French landscape painting.

During his career he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received an Honourable Mention (1905), later a Third-Class Medal (1908),

and finally the prestigious Prix Rosa Bonheur (1927).

He was also awarded the Medal of Honour and the Grand Prix of the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts, where he became one of its most highly regarded artists.

From the beginning of his career, Terraire focused on the landscapes of Haute-Savoie, Bugey, Dauphiné, and Bresse, regions distinguished by pastures,

mountains, valleys, and wide cloud-filled skies.

The painting is displayed in an elegant gilded frame, enhancing both its historical significance and decorative appeal.

Both the frame and the oil painting have been professionally and carefully restored.
