LARGE FLORAL STILL LIFE WITH ROSES AND HOLLYHOCKS, ANTIQUE PAINTINGS, FLORAL STILL LIFE, OIL ON CANVAS, XIX (QF726)
This antique floral still life painting is a refined and large 19th-century oil on canvas, of French origin.
The composition depicts a rich floral bouquet harmoniously arranged: pink and white roses, hollyhocks,
dahlias, carnations, daisies, and wildflowers, rendered with remarkable chromatic sensitivity and close
attention to botanical detail.
The warm, deep tones of the dark background enhance the brilliance of the petals, creating an elegant
chiaroscuro effect typical of the French academic tradition. The soft and controlled brushwork, with a
realistic rendering, and the slightly asymmetrical arrangement lend naturalness and movement to the scene.
The painting is enhanced by an important 19th-century gilt frame in fine gold leaf, contemporary with the
artwork and finely carved, increasing its decorative and collectible value.
Antique floral painting, still life signed at the lower right Trébutien, painter of flowers and fruit.
Étienne Léon Trébutien (1823–1871) was a French painter born in Bayeux (Calvados, France), best known for
his still life paintings, a highly appreciated genre in 19th-century France. He regularly exhibited at the
Salon des Artistes Français from 1857. Some of his works are held in the French museums of Bayeux and Montargis.
The elegant antique gilt frame and the oil painting have been professionally and carefully restored.
