French Landscape Of La Rivière De Vaux-de-Cernay, Raphaël Luc Ponson, Antique Oil Landscape, XIX (QP791)

ANTIQUE PAINTINGS, RAPHAËL LUC PONSON, SMALL FRENCH LANDSCAPE, OIL ON CANVAS, 19TH CENTURY (QP791)

The Antique Paintings and Landscape Paintings category features this evocative antique artwork: a French landscape painted

in oil on canvas, dating from the 19th century.

The painting depicts La Rivière de Vaux-de-Cernay, as written by the artist on the reverse of the stretcher. A natural landscape,

immersed in the greenery and tranquillity of the French countryside, surrounds a small pond. The Vaux-de-Cernay valley,

in the picturesque Vallée de Chevreuse, became particularly famous during the 19th century, attracting numerous landscape

painters captivated by its woodlands, waterways and natural light.

At the centre of the composition, a glimpse of luminous sky filters through the treetops, creating delicate contrasts of light and

shadow and adding depth to the woodland undergrowth. The painting reveals particular attention to atmospheric effects

and the natural rendering of light. This antique landscape painting is signed R. Ponson in the lower left-hand corner and is the work

of one of the most representative French landscape painters of the 19th-century Provençal school.

Raphaël Luc Ponson (1835–1904) entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille at approximately fifteen years of age, where he studied

under Émile Loubon (1809–1863), an important figure in Provençal landscape painting. Ponson further developed his artistic training

through stays in Paris and Italy, experiences that broadened his artistic outlook. He showed a particular sensitivity to plein-air painting

and to the artists of the Barbizon School.

Ponson was also awarded the title of Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour). The Musée d’Orsay documents

his participation in the Paris Salon from 1861 onwards.

The painting is presented in a beautiful, original and authentic gilded frame.

Both the antique frame and the painting have been professionally and carefully restored.
