ANTIQUE PAINTINGS, RIVER LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS, BARBIZON SCHOOL, OIL ON CANVAS, 19TH CENTURY. (QP763)

The category Antique Paintings, Landscape Paintings, presented here, is a refined antique oil on canvas painting, created in France

at the end of the 19th century.

It depicts a charming river landscape attributable to the renowned Barbizon School, the artistic movement that revolutionized landscape

painting by placing nature at the center of artistic representation.

The artwork portrays a peaceful riverbank crossed by a country path leading the viewer's eye toward a wide expanse of water.

In the foreground, a few fishermen can be seen engaged in their daily activities, figures only lightly sketched yet essential in bringing life and

authenticity to the composition.

This is a 19th-century antique painting. The artwork is unsigned, but the name J. Dupré is written in pencil on the back of the stretcher.

It may therefore be attributed to this French painter.

Jules Dupré (Nantes, April 5, 1812 – L'Isle-Adam, October 6, 1889) was one of the most important French landscape painters of the

19th century and a leading figure of the celebrated Barbizon School. Regarded as one of the pioneers in the renewal of landscape painting,

he helped establish a new artistic vision based on the direct observation of nature and the rendering of atmospheric effects.

The works of Jules Dupré are distinguished by the expressive strength of their majestic trees, the luminous skies, and the remarkable ability

to capture changing light and weather conditions. His landscapes frequently depict rivers, ponds, country paths, meadows, and rural scenes

animated by peasants or fishermen, all immersed in a poetic and contemplative atmosphere.

He regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon, where he achieved important recognition and growing success among collectors and institutions.

In 1849 he received the First-Class Medal at the Salon, and in 1867 he was awarded the title of Knight of the Legion of Honour,

one of France's highest distinctions. The painting is presented in its original authentic gilded frame.

Both the antique frame and the painting have been professionally and carefully restored.
