ANTIQUE WHITE MARBLE SCULPTURES, FEMALE NUDE SCULPTURE, FEMALE NUDITY, ART DECO, 20TH CENTURY. (STMA109)
The category Antique Marble and Alabaster Sculptures presents an Italian decorative sculpture from the early 20th century, depicting
an elegant female figure, a female nude, dating to the Art Deco period.
The work depicts a young woman with harmonious and sinuous forms, represented nude and kneeling, with her bust slightly turned and
her face directed upwards. The face, with delicate and idealized features, is characterized by a refined wavy hairstyle.
The craftsmanship of the white marble, combined with the smoothness of the surfaces, further enhances the elegance of the work and
the delicacy of its details.
The antique statue, depicting female nudity in marble, is signed on the reverse A. Gennarelli, an Italian sculptor active in France.
Amedeo Gennarelli (1881–1943) was born in Naples in 1881 and died in Paris in 1943. He is particularly known for his production of
Art Deco sculptures, characterized especially by elegant female figures, nudes and compositions of refined decorative character.
Trained within the Neapolitan artistic environment, Gennarelli was a pupil of Francesco Jerace, an important sculptor and artist originally
from Polistena, but closely connected with the artistic scene of Naples.
At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1909, Gennarelli moved to France, choosing Paris as the centre of his artistic activity.
He was known for his beautiful female nudes, which he created using different materials: marble, terracotta and bronze.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1913 until his death. During his lifetime, he received numerous medals and honours.
His art therefore occupies a position between the tradition of late 19th-century Italian figurative sculpture and the new
international taste of 20th-century Art Deco.
The sculpture is in excellent state of conservation.
Thus, Antique Marble Sculptures, Female Nude in Marble, Girl Statue, Art Deco, 20th Century becomes part of and
enriches the Bisgart Collection.
